776,198. Batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd. Nov. 16, 1955 [Feb. 4, 1955], No. 3316/55. Class 53. A storage battery comprises a lower compartment b containing the plates c and separators d and an upper compartment a having a gas vent h to atmosphere and a restricted gas vent f from the upper part of compartment b, the lower parts of the compartments being connected through ducts g. At the normal charging rate, the gas evolved passes through the restriction f and through the vent h to atmosphere. If the charging rate is too high, the abnormal amount of gas evolved is unable to pass through the restriction f quickly enough and the gas pressure in the compartment b forces the electrolyte through the ducts g into the compartment a until the gassing is at the normal rate. The restricted gas vent may be one or more holes f as shown or may be a microporous plug in the upper end of the tube e. |
