<PICT:0766976/III/1> The temperature of the reactant gases in a high pressure catalytic exothermic gas reaction is controlled by circulating a coolant by convection through heat exchangers in the reaction chamber and extracting heat from said coolant externally of said chamber, the cooling circuit being in pressure communication with a gas circuit for the reactant gases, as in the parent Specification. In the illustrated and preferred apparatus, hydrogen and nitrogen from M under pressure are passed through a heat exchanger D, upwardly around a catalyst chamber and then down through successive beds B1-B4 of catalyst alternating with cooling devices C1-C3, finally passing through heat exchanger D where their heat is given up to incoming gases before the ammonia is condensed in vessel F and remaining gases are recycled by pump G. Water in the cooling devices C1-C3, rises by convection into the steam boiler L where steam at lower pressure is formed. An expansion pot P is provided in which water is collected and the pressure of the gas circuit is applied via pipe Q at this point. To avoid penetration of steam into the gas circuit, pot P is maintained (when using a pressure above the critical pressure of water) at below the critical temperature of water. It is preferable to connect pot P to the lower end of the coil in the boiler L and not as shown. |
