A full-wave rectifier unit, designed to form part of vehicle battery - charging equipment, comprises two selenium rectifiers 18 secured by means of a tubular tie 15 and compression spacing member 25 within a hermetically sealed cylindrical metal casing formed by dished plates 10, 12 with peripheral flanges 11, 13 united, for example, by spot welding. The two annular rectifier plates 18 coated on one side only with selenium which is covered with a layer of metal constituting the positive electrode are assembled with the coated side pressed into direct contact with the inner face of the corresponding dished plate. The casing thus constitutes the positive pole and in use a bolt within the tubular tie 15 fixes the unit to the positive-earth frame of the vehicle. The negative terminals 21 insulatingly mounted on diametrically opposed cylindrical bosses 14 formed on the front dished plate 12 are connected via tags 24 and radial strips 20 to plates 19 pressed into contact with the uncoated side of selenium plates 18. The tubular tie 15 terminated at both ends by integral clamping flanges 17 passes centrally through the assembly and the compression member is as shown an annular pad of synthetic rubber, or Fig. 3 (not shown), an insulatingly mounted helical compression spring. The dished plates 10, 12 ensure adequate cooling.</p>
