[Also in Groups XI and XXXV] The barrel of a screw type extruding machine for coating wire with plastic is automatic. ally heated or cooled to main. tain a constant temperature (see Group XXXV). The barrel 20 is provided with a hardened liner 19 and is surrounded by an insulating sheath 25. A helical groove on the outside of the barrel accommodates an electric heater 30 (see Group XI), and a slot 57 in the top of the sheath enables four spray heads e.g. 54, to spray cooling water on to the barrel. An exhaust fan is mounted below the barrel and draws air through duct 40 when switched on manually. There is also a manual switch which selects either (1) thermostat controlled heating ; (2) thermostat controlled heating plus air cooling ; (3) thermostat heating and thermostat controlled spray cooling with air cooling.
