Epoxy resins are used to impregnate and coat ropes of inorganic non-metallic fibres, e.g. glass fabrics, the resin being thinned in a mixture comprising 300 parts (by weight) methyl or ethyl acetate, 30 parts diacetone alcohol, and 170 parts toluene or xylene, or being modified to increase flexibility by copolymerization with a liquid polysulphide polymer in the presence of an amine curing agent, or being modified with a polyamide. The ropes are used for staying poles for electric power lines.ALSO:The whole or the upper part of a stay for a pole in an overhead electric power line consists of a rope or ropes having cords or rovings of non-metallic inorganic fibre of high tensile strength, the rope or all the cords or rovings, or the rope and all the cords or rovings being impregnated with a water repellant, electrically insulating material. The rope, cords, or rovings may also be coated with the material, or the rope may have an extruded sheath of water-repellant, electrically insulating material. The construction eliminates the need for inserting insulators in the stay, and permits the stay to be attached to the pole at the centre of lateral pull of the line. The stay may have collars of water repellant insulating material to increase the surface leakage path. |
