The device (1) has a transmission unit including a communications module (6) to detect a portable electrical appliance (11) in a charging area. A transmitter module (10) transmits electromagnetic waves (26) in the area to charge a battery (22) of the appliance. A prevention module (4) receives information regarding presence of the appliance in the area and information regarding occurrence of an event indicative of a decision by a user to leave a vehicle, and controls a signaling unit (12) to prevent the user from forgetting the appliance in the area when the information are received together. An independent claim is also included for a method for preventing a user from forgetting a portable electrical appliance in a vehicle.
