<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct read data irrespective of failure of a reference member. <P>SOLUTION: A multifunction peripheral 1 comprises a reading unit 60 for reading a document, and a white tape 80 arranged facing the reading unit 60. The multifunction peripheral 1 acquires correction data for shading correction from a reading result obtained by the reading unit 60 reading the white tape 80. Also, correction data for shading correction is acquired from a reading result obtained by the reading unit 60 reading a margin portion of a document conveyed in an ADF 40. The multifunction peripheral 1 determines whether or not the reading result obtained by reading the white tape 80 has abnormality, and when it is determined to have no abnormality, performs shading correction on image data obtained by the reading unit 60 reading the document using the correction data acquired using the white tape 80.
