<p>A composition for sizing glass fibres comprises (1) an hydrolyzate of a vinyl alkoxysilane containing at least 2 alkoxy groups, the other silicon-bonded radicals being vinyl radicals, and (2) an aqueous emulsion or solution of a thermoplastic film-forming resin polymer. The hydrolysate is a true water solution of the silane prepared in accordance with Specification 745,374. Ingredient (2) is a stable dispersion which may be made by physically dispersing the selected monomer in water under controlled pH conditions and effecting polymerization in the presence of suitable catalysts. Homo-, co- or hetero-polymers of acrylate, or methacrylate, such as ethyl-acrylate, ethyl-methacrylate, methyl-methacrylate and butyl-methacrylate, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl pyridine and butadiene are specified. The compositions may also contain a cationic type lubricating agent such as the condensation product of a mono- or di-basic fatty acid and a polyethylene amine that has been solubilised with an organic acid such as acetic, methacrylic or acrylic acid. In examples, a water solution of vinyl triethoxysilane was added to (1) an emulsion of polyvinyl acetate and (2) tetra-ethylene pentamine amide of stearic acid solubilised with methacrylic acid, if necessary with subsequent adjustment of the pH to 4.5 with formic acid; (3) an emulsion of polyethyl acrylate and triethylene tetramine amide of palmitic acid solubilised with acrylic acid; (4) an aqueous solution of polyvinylpyridine solubilised with acrylic acid.
