The method involves switching a lighting unit i.e. headlight, from high beam to low beam by an automatic high beam assistance system based on a signal of a sensor, which is designed as a camera or ultrasound sensor. The switching of the lighting unit from high beam to low beam is implemented via a voice control or manual actuation of a driver of a motor vehicle, where the manual actuation is implemented via a steering column lever. The beam assistance system is activated again when the sensor outputs high beam-recommendation. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a lighting unit of a motor vehicle.
