<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cathode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, providing both high capacity and excellent thermal stability in such case as used for a cathode of a battery. <P>SOLUTION: A cathode active material consisting of particles of lithium nickel composite oxide is manufactured by baking a metallic compound having such atom ratio of a metal as corresponds to the atom ratio of the metal of the cathode active material. The metallic compound contains lithium hydroxide. The content of lithium in the lithium hydroxide is calculated based on a mass reduction rate at the time when a specimen collected from the lithium hydroxide blended with the metallic compound is heated and dried. Based on the content of the lithium, the amount of lithium hydroxide blended with the metallic compound is adjusted. Even in the case where the metallic compound is prepared in large amount, because adjustment of atomic ratio between the lithium contained in the metallic compound and other metal is easy, the deviation of the atomic ratio between the lithium in the cathode active material and the other metal which is obtained by baking the metallic compound from a target atomic ratio can be reduced. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
