In a method for straightening elongate material (105) in an automated straightening process, in particular for straightening wire or tube material, the material (105) is conveyed from a material stock through a straightening unit (120) which produces straightened material from the material (105) in a straightening operation by means of reshaping. The quality of straightening of the straightened material (105) is tested by means of a test rig (160) after running through the straightening unit (120), and the straightening process is controlled on the basis of at least one test signal from the test rig (160). In the method the quality of straightening is tested by determining at least one electric or magnetic material characteristic of the straightened material (105), in particular by means of magnetic inductive eddy current testing.
