The method involves producing a gap (12) with defined width between surfaces of material plates (1, 2) i.e. polystyrene foam plates. The material plates are guided via pressing rollers (8, 9), which press the material plates against each other. The pressing rollers are connected with each other in a material engagement manner based on impact of heat by a heating element (11). The heating element transmits heat to surfaces of the material plates in a contact free manner, where the surfaces face each other. The heating element is designed as an electrical resistor heater. The pressing rollers are designed as calenders (7). An independent claim is also included for a device for permanent planar connection of material plates made of foamed material.
