A method and system for session initiation protocol session protection. The method includes: a primary Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) entity selects a spare SIP entity for an SIP session to be protected, backs up the related data of the SIP session to be protected to the spare SIP entity, and notifies an adjacent SIP entity of the address information of the spare SIP entity; if, when sending a session request message to the primary SIP entity, the adjacent SIP entity finds that the primary SIP entity is unable to provide service, the adjacent SIP entity sends the session request message to the spare SIP entity; when the spare SIP entity receives the session request message, the spare SIP entity processes the related session message instead of the primary SIP entity. In the present invention, when the primary SIP entity is unable to provide service, the spare SIP entity is able to replace the primary SIP entity to provide service support, thus achieving the purpose of uninterrupted SIP session service.
