<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retaining structure for a honeycomb structure which is lightweight and has a small thermal effect on surrounding components, and a marine propulsion device. <P>SOLUTION: The retaining structure for a honeycomb structure includes a honeycomb structure 47, a holding mat 46, and a housing 45. The honeycomb structure 47 is a member made of ceramic. The holding mat 46 is in contact with the honeycomb structure 47 and directly holds the honeycomb structure 47. The housing 45 is in contact with the holding mat 46 and directly holds the holding mat 46. The housing 45 is made of aluminum. The housing 45 includes an inner wall 48, an outer wall 49, and a cooling water passage 50. The inner wall 48 comes in contact with the holding mat 46. The cooling water passage 50 is formed between the inner wall 48 and the outer wall 49. The inlet of the cooling water passage 50 is formed at one end of the housing 45.
