The method involves driving a synchronous generator (4) by a drive system (3) i.e. hydrostatic drive system, where the drive system is controlled at constant speed. Output voltage (u) of the synchronous generator is measured, where breaking of the output voltage is counteracted by increasing exciting current. Gradient of the exciting current increment is reduced when the output voltage falls below a predetermined threshold value. A variable displacement pump (8) is driven by an auxiliary drive of an internal combustion engine i.e. diesel engine (1).
