The method involves checking an operating mode of energy storage cells (Z1-Zm) and/or energy storage strands (St1-Stn) of an energy storage device (4) i.e. battery. Only a part of the energy storage strands comprising an incorrect energy storage strand or an incorrect energy storage strand which comprises the energy storage cell having the incorrect operating mode is switched off by a contactor (QSt1), if the operating mode of the energy storage cell or the respective energy storage strand is detected as incorrect. An independent claim is also included for an energy storage device for a vehicle.
