In a gas washing apparatus, the gas to be washed is passed through a duct with a convergent portion 2, a cylindrical portion 3 and a divergent portion 4 and liquid is fed tangentially through a pipe 6 on to the wall of the portion 3 so that it is entrained and atomized by the current of gas, the mixture of gas and liquid being separated in a static centrifugal separator 8, washed gas passing off by the pipe 12 and separated liquid returning to a decanting vessel 14 for removal of solid matter before being re-used as washing liquid. The separator 8 comprises a ring of spaced blades 9 and a centrally mounted conical deflector 10.
