In a gas mixture, e.g., air fractionating apparatus comprising a column 1 from which gaseous nitrogen passes along a duct 17 to a heat sink, e.g., the condenser space of a gas refrigerator 19 of the reversed hot gas engine type wherein the nitrogen is condensed and flows down a duct 21 and is forced up a duct 23 to act as reflux by means of vapour bubble pump action controlled by the level of liquid in the boiler 2, and from which apparatus product liquid nitrogen is withdrawn, e.g., through a branch 28 of the duct 21 the rate of withdrawal of product liquid nitrogen is controlled by means, e.g., a port 27 located at the normal level of liquid 26 in the duct 21. In operation air at substantially atmospheric pressure is drawn by the subatmospheric pressure within the column through a duct 15 past cold apertured fins 12 on which easily condensible impurities are deposited and through a duct 16. Energy for the bubble pump is derived by heat conducted from the boiler 2 along an apertured duct 6 and a metal strip 24 ; the duct 6 together with a duct 5 serving to connect the vapour space of the boiler 2 with the column 1 through a valved duct 8. In the event of the level in the boiler rising above normal, i.e., just above the bottom of a tube 4 which connects the liquid space of the boiler to the column, the apertures 25 in duct 6 become closed, the oxygen content in the duct decreases and hence the temperature is decreased resulting in a lower pumping action which in turn results in liquid nitrogen being transferred through the port 27 into the branch 28 to a receptacle 30. Lowering of the boiler level results in increasing the bubble pump action, cessation of overflow of liquid nitrogen through the port 27 until the extra reflux supplied to the column restores the level in the boiler 2. In a modification product nitrogen is withdrawn directly from the condenser of the refrigerator through a valved duct controlled by variations in an electrical resistance located at the normal liquid level on the downpipe.
