In a davit for launching a boat from a stowage position between decks 16, 17, each of the davit arms 10, from the outboard ends of which the boat 18 is suspended, has its inboard end pivotally connected at 11 to a carriage 12 which is underslung from wheels or rollers 13, 14 engaging a normally substantially horizontal track 15 which is straight and is fixed to the underside of the upper of the two decks, and the inner end of the davit arm is connected through gearing (toothed quadrant 19 and train of spur gears 20, 21, 22, 23) with a spur pinion 24 mounted on the carriage and meshing with a fixed rack 25 extending longitudinally of the track. As the davit arms are swung down under their weight and that of the boat by paying out control ropes 28, the geared connections rotate and through the engagement of pinions 24 with racks 25 the carriages 12 are travelled outboard along the tracks 15 until the suspended boat is clear of the ship's side and can be lowered by paying out falls 29. |
