An upright surface treating appliance includes a main body and a stand pivotable relative to the main body between a supporting position and a retracted position. A stand retaining mechanism is provided for releasably retaining the stand in the supporting position, and which includes a locking member pivotably moveable about a first axis to release the stand as it is moved from the supporting position to the retracted position, and about a second axis spaced from the first axis to retain the stand as it is returned to the supporting position. At least one biasing member applies a relatively large first force to the locking member which resists movement thereof about the first axis. To facilitate the return of the stand to its supporting position, the biasing member is arranged to apply a relatively small second force to reset the locking member following movement thereof about the second axis. |
