<PICT:0811468/III/1> Inorganic liquids containing crystallizable inorganic impurities are contacted directly with a refrigerant vaporizable under the conditions of the contacting step to cool the liquid to promote crystallization of the impurities, the liquid then being passed to a settling zone where the impurities crystallize from the liquid, and liquid free from impurities and refrigerant is withdrawn from the settling zone. Brine containing sulphate impurities is fed by a line 36 to a heat exchanger 28, into which a liquefied refrigerant, such as butane or isobutane, is introduced by a line 64. The refrigerant vaporizes, cooling the brine, and passes out by the line 56. The chilled brine passes by a pipe 40 to a crystallizer 10, where the impurities crystallize and fall to the bottom and are drawn off through an outlet 18. Any crystals forming in the heat exchanger 28 pass into the crystallizer 10 by a pipe 38. Any refrigerant carried into crystallizer 10 is removed by a line 48. Vaporized refrigerant in line 56 is cooled by indirect contact with compressed refrigerant in an interchanger 54, compressed, and returned to heat exchanger 28 by line 64. Brine free from impurities is removed by an outlet 24 attached to the apex of a conical baffle 22 in crystallizer 10. |
