In a multi-stage compressor or pump comprising at least two impeller assemblies of at least one stage each, the assemblies being driven in opposite directions by contrarotating gas turbine rotors through coaxial inner and outer shafts, at least the final stage of the higher pressure assembly discharges the fluid in radially outward direction and the lower pressure assembly has an axial intake and discharges into the first stage of the higher pressure assembly. In the blower shown in Fig. 1, a turbine rotor 31 drives an impeller 1 of the compressor through a shaft 3, and an oppositely rotating turbine rotor 35 drives a further impeller 4 through a hollow shaft 6 which is concentric with the shaft 3. Guide blades 40 may be provided at the turbine inlet. Shaft 6 is journalled in a bearing 80, and shaft 3 is journalled within the shaft 6 at 60 and 61 and also in a stationary bearing 62. Lubricant from a pipe 90 passes through the shaft 3 to the bearings 60, 61. Bearings 80 and 62 are lubricated through pipes 91 and 93 respectively. Lubricant is drained from the bearings through pipes 92 and 94. Sealing air is bled-off from the compressor to labyrinth packings by way of a clearance space 102 and bores 103. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 additional impellers 21 and 14 of the axial-flow type are attached to the impeller 1, and an intercooler 15 is provided. The turbine rotor 31 has two sets of blading 32 and 32<SP>1</SP> with stationary guide blading 46 interposed. Freely rotating rings may be interposed between the shafts 3 and 6 and the respective bearings. In the compressor shown in Fig. 8, the compressor impeller 1 is of the axial-flow type, with two stages, and the turbine rotors 31 and 35 are also of the axialflow type. Shaft 3 is journalled in outboard bearings 65, 65<SP>1</SP>, and shaft 6 is journalled in bearings 81<SP>1</SP>, 81<SP>11</SP>. In a modification, the turbine is generally similar to that shown in Fig. 2, but is instead of the inward-flow type. In Fig. 7, the shroud 22 of the impeller 4 supports axial-flow blading 20, 20<SP>1</SP> rotating oppositely to blading 2, 2<SP>1</SP> carried by the shaft 3. Shaft 3 is journalled in outboard bearings 65, 65<SP>1</SP> and shaft 6 is journalled on shaft 3 by means of bearings 60, 61 having freely rotating bushes 601 61<SP>1</SP>. Sleeves 60<SP>11</SP>, 61<SP>11</SP> are interposed between the bushes and the shaft 3.
