PURPOSE: A method for recognizing a parking space and an apparatus for the same are provided to identify whether an object at a parking space is a parked vehicle or a pillar based on a lower sensor and an upper sensor. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for recognizing a parking space includes a lower sensor(110), an upper sensor(120), and a recognition processor. The lower sensor is mounted at one part of a vehicle and detects an object at a parking space to output data. The upper sensor is mounted at the upper part of the lower sensor and detects the object at the parking space to output data. The recognition processor identifies whether the object is a parked vehicle(320) or a pillar(310) based on the similarity of output data.
