PURPOSE: A composition containing brown algae extract for activating GABA_A-benzodiazepine receptor is provided to ensure anti-anxiety and anti-convulsant effecta and to treat insomnia. CONSTITUTION: A composition for activating GABA_A benzodiazepine receptor contains brown algae extract as an active ingredient. The composition is used for anti-anxiety and anti-convulsant effect and treating insomnia. The brown algae include Ecklonia cava or Ecklonia kurome. The brown algae extract is water extract, ethanol extract, methanol extract, or mixture thereof. The water extract of brown algae is prepared by extracting brown algae using water of 40-100 Deg. C. for 2-48 hours. The ethanol extract is prepared by extracting brown algae with 35-75% ethanol at 20-60 Deg. C. for 2-36 hours.
