The absorber (4) has a housing (41) for receiving a portion of package (2) utilized for transporting radioactive materials. A cushioning structure is provided with a set of wooden blocks (400, 402, 404). The cushioning structure comprises a set of insulating partitions (45, 47, 49) made of layers of self-extinguishing material that produces intumescent ash while burning, where the partitions define the housing in which wood blocks are inserted. The partitions are made of cushioning material. The shock absorber is provided in a cylindrical form. An independent claim is also included for a transportation assembly.
