An illumination device (18) is arranged in a lateral region of the housing with a small axial spacing to a shaving head (12). The illumination device has a light source i.e. LED, to emit a light beam on a region of a textile surface lying beside the shaving head. The illumination device has light emitting characteristics with a proportion of short-wave light such as purple or UV light.
