<p>An optical fiber, which comprises a core part, and a cladding part which is formed on the exterior circumference of the core part and which has a lower refraction than the maximum refraction of the core part, has characteristics at a wavelength of 1550nm of an effective core cross-section area of 120µm2 or more in a basic propagation mode, an effective core cross-section area of 170µm2 or more in a first higher order propagation mode, and an effective refraction in the first higher order propagation mode which is 0.0005 or more greater than the refraction of the cladding part. Thus, provided are an optical fiber which uses the base and the higher order propagation modes in optical transmission and which has both a large effective core cross-section area and a small bending loss in each propagation mode which is used, and an optical transmission system which employs the optical fiber.</p> |
