The method involves sequentially monitoring an operation of a vehicle and/or a hydrodynamic retarder (11), and sequentially incrementing a count of operating hours, during the operation of the vehicle and/or the retarder. An operability impairment of a vehicle brake assembly is detected, where malfunction or failure of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) (18) is detected as the impairment. Impairment describing data is mapped with respect to the current operating hour count, and the data and the current operating hour count are stored, upon detection of the impairment. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control device for a hydrodynamic retarder of a vehicle brake assembly (2) a vehicle brake assembly.
