A control device for an internal combustion engine equipped with a turbocharger and an adjustable valve mechanism, which is positioned on the intake side and/or the exhaust side, is provided with: a scavenging setting means whereby the upper limit value for the amount of scavenging air that traverses the interior of the cylinder from the intake passage and enters the exhaust passage during the valve overlap period is set so as to satisfy the performance requirements of the internal combustion engine; and an adjustable valve control means whereby the length of the valve overlap period is controlled according to the amount of scavenging air.
