The device (1') has two middle fork prongs (4') connected to each other at a predetermined distance (6'). Outer fork prongs (5') are moved to the respective middle prongs such that fork prong pairs (7') are used as a unit and/or the outer prongs are positioned at a distance from the respective middle prongs. Fork prongs (3') are moved at a predetermined distance from each other. Each prong pair has a conveying element (10'), which moves goods to be transported by using a fork prong apparatus (2'), where the goods are pulled up onto the fork prongs and/or pushed below the fork prongs. The fork prongs are provided with another conveying element whose transport belt is made of plastic and consists of steel wires. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a mounting device.
