<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent excellent in storage stability, to provide a liquid crystal aligned layer, which is produced by using the liquid crystal aligning agent and is excellent in adhesiveness to a substrate film, in film hardness and in liquid crystal aligning property even when the layer is subjected to heat treatment at a low temperature in a short time, and to provide a retardation film having the liquid crystal aligned layer, a method for producing a retardation film, and a liquid crystal display element. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal aligning agent contains: [A] a component having an epoxy group and a hydrogen donor in the same or different molecules; and [B] a metal chelate compound.
