S100B-BASED MEANS AND METHODS FOR DIAGNOSING CEREBRAL DAMAGES IN ACUTE INFLAMMATION

The present invention relates to the field of diagnostic measures. Specifically, it relates to a method for diagnosing in a subject exhibiting a symptom of acute inflammation whether a cerebral damage is an ischemic cerebral damage or a non-ischemic cerebral damage comprising determining the amount of the biomarkers S100B and sFlt-1 in a sample of said subject and comparing said amount to reference amounts whereby it is diagnosed whether the cerebral damage is an ischemic cerebral damage or a non-ischemic cerebral damage. A method for diagnosing whether a subject exhibiting a symptom of acute inflammation is at increased risk of mortality comprising determining the amount of the biomarker S100B in a sample of said subject and comparing said amount to a reference amount whereby it is diagnosed whether the subject is at increased risk of mortality, or not. Further encompassed are diagnostic devices and kits for carrying out the aforementioned methods.
