<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately perform the detection of defective nozzles of various inks. <P>SOLUTION: Inspection patterns of each ink are printed on a transparent print medium for an inspection, by the use of a print head having a plurality of nozzle groups which discharges multiple types of ink, respectively. The inspection patterns printed on the transparent medium are read by a sensor. When reading the inspection patterns, a background color is switched, by the use of a background color switching section, to the background color according to ink kinds of the inspection patterns to be read.
