Classes 24 and 44 In a shackle comprising a cylindrical body portion 4 having a cavity 3 of rectangular section and a threaded hole 6 into which is screwed a cap 5, the shackle pin 7 has a threaded head 14, a shank 13 of smaller diameter than the head, and hexagonal sockets 15 and 16 enabling the pin to be rotated by a remotely operated tool. The pin 7 is retained in holes 8 and 9 by a threaded ring 17 locked by a grub screw 18. The hole 8 has a threaded portion 10 of the same diameter as the head 14 and an unthreaded portion 12 in which the shank 13 is a sliding fit. The hole 9 is threaded throughout. The shackle is shown suspended from a lifting cable 19 having a ferrule 20 resting in a hole 21 in the cap 5, with the pin 7 engaging a lifting eye 23 formed integral with the attachment head 24 of a control rod for a nuclear reactor. The lifting eye 23 is in the form of a plate of rectangular crosssection with a hole 25, Fig. 2, having a major circular part 26 and a minor part 27 of smaller radius which engages the shank 13 of the pin 7. To release the control rod, the shackle is lowered on to the head 24 so that the part 26 of the hole 25 comes into line with the head 14 of the pin 7. The socket 16 is then engaged by a long hexagonal rod and the head 14 screwed out of the hole 9, pushed through the hole 26, and screwed into the portion 10 of the hole 8, thus securing the pin 7 while the shackle is open. The shackle is closed by transferring the hexagonal rod to the socket 15 and carrying out the .above operations in the reverse order. |
