Primary alcohols are obtained by oxidizing an aluminium hydrocarbon containing aluminium bound to the group -CH2-CHR1R11, in which R1 and R11 are hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals, with molecular oxygen and decomposing the aluminium alcoholate so formed. The oxidation may be carried out at a temperature between 0 DEG and 100 DEG C., preferably between 30 DEG and 60 DEG C. In the examples: (a) nitrogen is bubbled through tri-n-octyl aluminium in a recycle apparatus and at one point in the cycle oxygen is introduced; the aluminium octylate obtained is decomposed by the addition of water and heating and the octyl alcohol formed is distilled off; (b) aluminium tri-(phenyl-ethyl) is treated as in (a) to give phenyl ethyl alcohol; (c) a mixture of aluminium alkyls obtained by cracking higher Fischer-Tropsch paraffins and treating the product with tri-isobutyl aluminium is oxidized and the alcoholates formed are then hydrolysed as in (a) to give a mixture of primary alcohols; (d) a higher aluminium alkyl is obtained by heating triethyl aluminium and ethylene under pressure and the product is treated as in (a) to give normal alcohols containing from 6 to 20 carbon atoms; (e) the aluminium compound obtained from 1-vinyl cyclohexene-(3) is treated as in (a) to give the alcohol of formula <FORM:0804335/IV (b)/1> similarly alcohols of formul <FORM:0804335/IV (b)/2> are obtained from limonene and camphene respectively; and (f) dimeric dodecene is converted with tri-isobutyl aluminium into the compound <FORM:0804335/IV (b)/3> which is similarly oxidized to the alcohol <FORM:0804335/IV (b)/4> Specifications 713,081, 742,642, 763,824, 770,707, 778,098 and 794,359 are referred to. |
