<p>A method of transmitting data packets between network nodes in a wireless telecommunications network utilising an acknowledge request protocol, a computer program product and a network node are disclosed. The method of transmitting data packets between network nodes in a wireless telecommunications network utilising an acknowledge request protocol in which consecutive transmission time intervals are provided for transmission of data packets, a plurality of the consecutive transmission time intervals forming a round trip time period, retransmission of a data packet occurring if an indication that a data packet was corrupted is received within the round trip time period, the acknowledge request protocol employing up to a predetermined number of acknowledgement request processes supporting transmission of data packets, each acknowledgement request process having an associated transmission time interval within which to transmit a data packet, comprises the steps of: determining a transmission requirement associated with the data packets; and allocating fewer than the predetermined number of the acknowledgement request processes in response to the transmission requirement to selectively prevent transmission time intervals within the round trip time period associated with non-allocated acknowledgement request processes from being allocated to support transmission of the data packets over the data channel. In this way, the effective maximum data rate of the channel supporting the data transmission is reduced or throttled back, based on the number of transmission time intervals utilized. By allocating fewer processes it is possible to reduce the effective bit rate on the channel and reduce the channel load which enables an increase in the number of network nodes which may transmit simultaneously over that channel.</p> |
