An insoluble, infusible cation-exchange resin is prepared by reacting under alkaline conditions an aldehyde, resorcinol and a chloracetate. The three starting materials can be reacted together; the m-hydroxy phenoxy acetate made by reacting resorcinol and the chloracetate under alkaline conditions may be reacted with the aldehyde or the condensation product of resorcinol with an aldehyde may be reacted with the chloracetate. In the example a cation exchange resin is prepared by heating a mixture of resorcinol and chloracetic acid previously neutralized with caustic soda whilst, adding aqueous caustic soda, adding further caustic soda and formalin solutions and heating until the reaction mixture thickens.
