A protection system is provided for a DC electrical power network having a plurality of DC load feeder circuits which connect a DC supply to respective loads. The system has a plurality of current interrupters SW1, SW2 positioned on a respective DC load feeder circuit, and being operable to prevent current passing along that circuit. The system also has a single capacitance C1 connectable to the circuits in parallel with the interrupters, and a plurality of thyristors T1, T2. Each thyristor is connected in series with the capacitance and connectable to a respective circuit in parallel with the interrupter of that circuit. The thyristors are switched off in normal use. On identification of a fault in one of the circuits, the respective thyristor can be switched on to provide a forward conducting mode which shunts fault current from the interrupter of that circuit to the capacitance. The circuit interrupters may be either mechanical or solid-state electrical switches.
