A smart plug 2 comprises an adaptor with a plug 13 and a socket outlet 10 into which an appliance can be received, means for monitoring and calculating the power consumption of the appliance, means for transmitting power consumption information and means for identifying the appliance. The appliance may be identified by the transmission, reflection and detection of light signals from the socket 10 to a surface of the applianceâ s plug and back to a sensor in the socket 10. The applianceâ s plug may have a patterned surface which is readable by the light sources in the socket 10. The light emitting means may comprise a pipe with a first branch with a light emitter and a second branch with a light detector. Four such pipes may correspond with four dots which may encode a binary identifier. The readable identifying pattern may be disposed on a label having openings for the pins of the applianceâ s plug. |
