808,384. Making cartons. JOHNSON, A. April 9, 1956, No. 10751/56. Class 18. A machine for setting up tray-form cartons comprises a plunger for pressing a blank through a die having at its ends means for interlocking pairs of flaps extending from the carton sides to lie across the carton ends. The plunger 56 reciprocates vertically along guides 42, 43, being biassed to its uppermost position by spring 51, and has a foot 57 with grooves 61-64 enabling it to clear during upward travel the various mechanisms protruding into the die aperture. The foot 57 presses the blank base panel 71 between die projections 113, 114, 116, 117 and 118, 119 which fold up end panels 77, 78, locking flaps 91, 92 and locking tabs 101, 102 in sequence at right angles to the remainder of the blank. As die side portions 121, 122 fold up the blank side panels 86, 87, the base panel 71 is pressed against portions 141 of pivoted members 131 causing can parts 143 thereof to be rotated against the flaps 91, 92 to open their cuts 98, 99. At the same time a bevel on the portions 141 guides the tabs 101, 102 into interlocking relationship with the flaps. To ensure complete interlocking, further movement of the plunger causes the panel 71 to move downwardly levers 154 which are so coupled to further levers 161 that the inner extremities of the latter move downwards at a greater rate than the plunger, pressing on the upper edges of the members 91, 101 and 97, 102 to force them into full engagement. The blank includes optionally a cover flap 32 at one end which is folded inwards by a tongue 176 the tongue being initially pressed clear by the plunger and then springing inwardly above it to engage the flap. As the plunger returns upwards the carton is gripped by levers 191 these levers being initially cammed clear by the descending plunger and springing inwardly at the bottom of its travel to embrace the carton sides in recesses 206. Levers 221 operate in a similar fashion to press the carton sides inwardly beyond the upright position to prevent bulging in the finished carton when the plunger next descends it again cams the levers 192 clear, releasing the finished carton 209 and permitting its ejection by the resilience of its sides co-acting with surfaces 233 of the levers 221. |
