The method involves inserting an expansion mandrel (20) into a barrel of a cylinder casing according to an angular position around an axis of the barrel, where the mandrel includes a forging cavity (28) on its outer circumference. A part of a coated surface of the barrel is forged by radial contraction and expansion of the mandrel according to the angular position. The mandrel is positioned inside the barrel according to an additional angular position around the axis. A portion of the surface is forged by radial contraction and expansion of the mandrel according to the additional position.
