The invention relates to a method for managing the energy of a rail vehicle (2) comprising a plurality of on-board sources (12, 14) and electrical energy consumers (6, 20), said sources comprising energy storage means (14). Said method comprises the steps of: collecting information relating to the available quantities of electrical energy that can be produced by the storage means (14) and to the maximum electrical power that may be absorbed by the consumers (6, 20); calculating an autonomy of the storage means (14), said autonomy being equal to the ratio between the electrical energy available in the storage means (14) and the maximum electrical power collected; and optimising the use of the sources (12, 14) for supplying the electrical energy according to the calculated autonomy.
