[Problem] The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a positive electrode material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which has high rate characteristics and high energy density; and a battery which uses the positive electrode material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries. [Solution] A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery of one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a positive electrode that contains a positive electrode material, a conductive agent and a binder; a negative electrode; a separator; and a nonaqueous electrolyte. The nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is characterized in that: the positive electrode material contains core particles and a coating material that covers 10-90% (inclusive) of the surfaces of the core particles; the core particles are composed of a compound that is represented by LiaMbPO4 (wherein M represents at least one element selected from among Fe, Mn, Co and Ni, and 0 < a = 1.1 and 0 < b = 1 are satisfied.); and the coating part is composed of a compound that absorbs and desorbs Li ions within the potential range in which the core particles are during charging and discharging. |
