A PROTECTIVE HOUSING FOR A CEILING MOUNTED RECESSED ELECTRICALLY POWERED FITTING, AND A METHOD FOR PROTECTING THE FITTING

A protective housing (1) for protecting a ceiling mounted recessed light fitting (2) from insulating material (4) on a ceiling panel (5) through which the light fitting (2) is recessed comprises a first housing element (7), a second housing element (8) and a closure element (9). The first housing element (7) defines a first hollow interior region (11) which accommodates the light fitting (2). The first housing element (7) is secured to the ceiling panel (5) by a lower flange (12) extending around the first housing element (7). The second housing element (8) defines a second hollow interior region (44) which communicates with the first hollow interior region (11). A hollow plug element (23) of the closure element (9) engages an upwardly facing open mouth (48) of the second housing element (8) and is provided with slots (24) which define with the second housing element (8) vent openings (27). A shield (29) extending around the closure element (9) prevents direct radial access to the vent openings (27). Where the depth of insulating material (4) is relatively small, the second housing element (8) may be omitted, and the closure element (9) is engaged in an upwardly facing open mouth (19) of the first housing element (7) whereby the slots (24) form with an upwardly extending side wall (18) of the first housing element (7) the vent openings (27).
