The apparatus has a continuous gas mass flow generating pressurized gas source, a pressure gas line for supplying the pressurized gas to to-be-tested exhaust system component and a pulsation generator (10) for converting the continuous gas mass flow into pulsed gas mass flow. The pulsation generator comprises an inner housing (16) with inlet opening and outlet opening. The shut-off elements rotatably mounted in inner housing, define a variable flow section between inlet opening and outlet opening based on the rotational position of the shut-off elements.
