<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automotive battery system contactor and a device and method needed for related switching operations. <P>SOLUTION: A magnetic field is aligned with a direction in which an electric current flows in a contact plate disposed between magnets generating the magnetic field and a Lorentz force generated thereby promotes extinction of an arc through a relay opening sequence, while also the Lorentz force may be used to reduce a tendency of obstructing the operation of a mechanism which actuates a solenoid or another switch. When a rotary base mechanism is utilized to establish contact between the contact plate and a current conveyance terminal, a possibility that the relay will open unintentionally is reduced.
