PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus preventing an erroneous color/monochrome determination caused by a relative speed change between a document and a reading means during reading scan.

SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus includes: reading means 104 for scanning and reading an image of a document moving relatively; and determination means 202 for determining whether the image of the document is a color image or a monochromatic image on the basis of image data of the document read by the reading means 104. The determination means 202 changes the determination reference of the color image on the basis of the moving speed of the document relative to the reading means 104 or a change in the moving speed.
