The appliance has a detecting unit for determining an operation duration of the appliance in which a user operates an operating element. A comparison unit compares the actuation duration with upper threshold value, so that a function of the appliance is activated when the duration is equal to or below the upper threshold value. The comparison unit compares the duration with lower threshold value, so that the function is activated when the duration lies between the values. The function is selected as an illumination function, switching-on function or switching-off function of a display. The operating element is designed as a switch or sensor and/or touch key.
