Provided is a head mounted display having good ease of installation to an eyeglass-type support frame, capable of reducing obstruction to the field of vision, capable of reducing light quantity loss, and also appropriate for a configuration that performs left and right eye imaging taking stereoscopic viewing into account. The head mounted display comprises an image display unit, an image display section that emits image light, a first polarized beam splitter, a mirror, a ¼ wavelength plate, a second polarized beam splitter, and an imaging element. The support frame is configured as an eyeglass type having a front section arranged in front of the face of the viewer and temple sections for hooking on to the ears of the viewer. The first polarized beam splitter, the mirror, the ¼ wavelength plate, the second polarized beam splitter, and the imaging element are all arranged on the same optical axis in substantially the horizontal direction along a frame that configures the front section of the support frame. The mirror and the ¼ wavelength plate are arranged near the center of the front section of the support frame.
