PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide polynucleotides encoding antigenic type C HIV polypeptides as well as uses of the polynucleotides and polypeptide products in immunogenic compositions.

SOLUTION: The invention relates to polynucleotides encoding immunogenic HIV type C polypeptides, and uses of the polynucleotides in applications including DNA immunization, generation of packaging cell lines, and production of HIV type C proteins. Polypeptides encoded by new type C HIV sequences and synthetic expression cassettes generated from them and other type C HIV sequences are also described.
